HYPERTENSION |
Adult:
[Atenolol 50 mg + Nifedipine (SR) 20 mg] 1 cap/tab once daily or bid. |

Precautions |
Atenolol is a cardioselective b-blocker. Nifedipine is a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker. It acts primarily on the cells of the myocardium and the smooth muscle cells of the coronary arteries and the peripheral resistance vessels. Combination of the two drugs results in additive antihypertensive action. |

Potentially Life-threatening
Adverse Drug Reactions |
Combination safer than individual molecules - headache, palpitation, flushing, depression, wheezing, dizziness, hypotension, GI upsets. |

Adverse Drug Reactions |
Prolonged hypotension specially in elderly, during anesth (combination to be stopped 36 h before surgery), aggravation of angina, CCF and severe pulmonary hypertension. |

Interactions |
Reduced clearance of disopyramide, ampicillin reduces atenolol levels leading to excessive nifedipine effects, antacids reduce bioavailability, additive vasodilator effects with nitrates, increased bioavailability of nifedipine with theophylline, phenytoin and cimetidine, altered levels of digitalis. |
